Type of activity: Group or Individual
No list of fun ways to learn a language would be complete without music. The objective of this activity is to learn key words in the language of the host country through music.
This activity aims to support the TCN(s) to learn the language of the host country through the use of music.
The mentor needs:
- To identify a song in the language of the host country together with its lyrics.
- To support the TCN(s) to identify some words and find their translation/meaning with the aid of a dictionary.
- To motivate the TCN(s) to learn the language.
- One song in the language of the host country together with its lyrics.
- One laptop.
- Print-out(s) of the song’s lyrics.
- Bilingual dictionary/ies of Greek and the language of the TCN(s) or of Greek-English, in case the TCN(s) speak(s) English sufficiently.
- Highlighter(s).
Implementation Steps
The mentor should make questions to the TCN(s) in order to identify the type of song that he/she/they like(s) the most: pop, rock, slow, etc. Based on the preferences of the TCN(s), the mentor identifies a song in the language of the host country together with its lyrics.
The mentor motivates the TCN(s) to listen to the song twice and try to follow the lyrics of the song as well. Then, the TCN(s) highlight(s) some of the words, look(s) them up at the dictionary, and with the support of the mentor try/ies to pronounce them.
This activity is used to motivate the TCN(s) to learn the language of the host country. Once this is achieved, the mentor provides the TCN(s) with different options that will help him/her/they to learn the language.
During this meeting, the TCN(s) present(s) his/her/their experience to the mentor or to the mentor and the group, in the case of a group meeting.
After that, the mentor signs the action plan(s) of the TCN(s) as completed.
